Introducing the Supply Chain Directory with HVMC

With the introduction of our new Directory product, we’re proud to announce we’re working with the High Value Manufacturing Catapult (HVMC) to deliver a public database for Made Smarter Innovation | Digital Supply Chain Hub that tracks the full UK manufacturing supply chain harnessing our Real-Time Industrial Classifications (RTICs).

Building a free UK Supply Chain Directory

Our RTIC data has allowed our partners to gain a reliable view of the UK’s emerging economies, something we haven’t been able to do with traditional SIC codes alone. Generating over 350 RTICS in the past few years, our platform users and clients have been able to harness this data to map growing sectors and verticals, analyse geographic trends and use the insight to make informed decisions about our economy.

Working with some of the UK’s top institutions and governing bodies, we’ve been able to take this process one step further and allow our partners direct access to our data and technology.

In a project with HVMC and Digital Catapult, as part of the Made Smarter Innovation | Digital Supply Chain Hub, we’re proud to announce we’ve been working on a UK Supply Chain Directory that will be free for the public and manufacturing industry to use. This live database of companies and industries, tracks the full UK manufacturing supply chain using our combination of website crawling, machine learning and access to 3rd party data.

Directory benefits

Working closely with HVMC, we’ve been able to go beyond the limitations of SIC codes and build a full view of the manufacturing supply chain using our real-time classifications. Due to the outdated nature of SIC codes (last updated in 2007) and 30% of UK companies self-classifying as ‘other’, using just SIC data doesn’t give us a true view of today’s manufacturing industry. However, using RTICs, we can generate up-to-date and accurate industry classifications that capture emerging economies and map the true scale of companies in the manufacturing supply chain.

Building sector groupings powered by our RTICs, the result is an easy-to-use system that not only allows businesses to better target new suppliers and customers but also drives more strategic development in the UK’s manufacturing community.

What’s new?

As well as the usual features you might expect from The Data City platform, the UK Supply Chain Directory has also been designed and customised for public use, with bespoke branding and a host of new features. Including:

  • Claim a company – companies and businesses will be able to claim profiles within the UK Supply Chain Directory and edit specific data and fields within the platform, such as turnover, employee count or their description.
  • Company capabilities – additionally, for the first-time companies will also feature capabilities, keywords that showcase specific specialisms within the industry that will be searchable within the database
  • Admin portal – HVMC has a customised admin portal, that showcases relevant statistics, users and admin rights for approving company claim requests.
