New Quantum Technologies RTIC developed with DSIT, GOS and IUK

Introducing our new Quantum Technologies RTIC, developed in partnership with UK government sector experts.

At The Data City, we’ve always been at the forefront of identifying and mapping the UK’s emerging economies. With over 400 Real-Time Industrial Classifications (RTICs), built using AI and expert insights, our platform helps users understand cutting-edge technologies.

We’re excited to announce our latest RTIC: Quantum Technologies, designed to map the UK’s quantum sector in unprecedented detail.

Developed in collaboration with experts from the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT), Government Office for Science (GOS), and Innovate UK Business Connect, this RTIC is set to transform how we understand and engage with the quantum landscape.

This marks the beginning of a broader collaboration with DSIT and other partners to publish new and updated RTICs over the next 12 months, including those for AI, Robotics, and Advanced Materials.

Why quantum technology matters

Quantum technologies are no longer just the stuff of science fiction. They’re providing real-world solutions to some of society’s most pressing challenges, from quantum computers capable of solving problems beyond today’s technology to quantum sensors that could revolutionise medical screening.

But despite its potential, and the opportunity for the UK to lead the way when it comes to quantum development and investment, the quantum sector has been difficult to quantify.

With no standardised definition, it’s been hard to say for sure which companies are truly at the forefront of quantum innovation. Until now.

Introducing the Quantum Technologies RTIC

Our Quantum RTIC identifies 101 businesses across the UK that sell or are developing products that directly use next generation quantum technologies. And they’re not just surviving, they’re thriving, with an impressive average annual growth rate of 22.8%.

These companies are working in diverse areas like quantum communication, computing, materials, and sensing, each pushing the boundaries of what’s possible with next-generation quantum technologies.

This RTIC goes beyond the limitations of traditional classification systems like SIC codes, which have struggled to keep up with modern industry developments. Instead, our RTIC harnesses machine learning, web scraping and expert input to build a dynamic mapping and understanding of the sector.

For the first time, policymakers, economists, investors and government departments have a reliable resource to explore this rapidly growing sector.

As well as sector insights and metrics, the RTIC also shows the key players in the quantum technology space.

Global giants like BT, Vodafone, and Thales are making significant strides in quantum research and development. Meanwhile, UK spinouts like Orca Computing and Oxford Ionics are emerging from academic institutions like the University of Oxford, already developing in the quantum space.

The future of quantum

But this is just the beginning. As our CEO Alex Craven puts it, “This work defines a framework to determine which companies fall in and out of scope, placing policymakers, businesses, and researchers in a position to engage with the quantum sector with greater confidence.”

The Quantum RTIC is a foundation for further analysis and understanding of the sector’s potential, including its contributions to employment, revenue, and productivity.

And we’re not stopping at quantum. Over the next 12 months, we’ll be working with our partners to publish more RTICs covering other cutting-edge.

A new standard in industrial classification

The Data City is committed to being the definitive resource for understanding emerging sectors. With over 400 RTICs already available, our platform offers real-time insights into the most dynamic areas of the UK economy.

As we expand our data resources, we’re excited to see how the Quantum RTIC will empower researchers, policymakers, and investors to make informed decisions in this rapidly evolving landscape.

Whether you’re a quantum enthusiast, an investor looking for the next big thing, or a policymaker trying to navigate this new frontier, our Quantum RTIC is here to guide you.

The Quantum Technologies RTIC is now live in our platform and available to all Data City users.
