Media release: The Data City launch dataset mapping the UK FinRegTech sector in collaboration with Innovate Finance

We’ve shared some great news today, all covered in the press release below. More to follow!

We have launched the first live dataset mapping the UK’s Financial Regulatory Technology (FinRegTech) market in collaboration with Innovate Finance, the industry body for the UK FinTech sector.

The new Real-Time Industrial Classification (RTIC) identifies companies developing technology to help financial institutions navigate, automate and analyse the UK’s increasingly complex regulatory environment.

Financial Services is one of the eight priority sectors in the Government’s Industrial Strategy. Within it, financial technology firms are recognised as a frontier growth area. But until now, there has been no clear, consistent way to define the FinRegTech ecosystem. This dataset changes that.

Using artificial intelligence and company website data, The Data City’s Industry Engine classifies firms based on what they actually do, not outdated Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) codes. The result is a real-time, evidence-based view of the sector.

The FinRegTech RTIC maps the sector across nine verticals, including AI-powered regulatory solutions, financial crime and AML compliance, ESG reporting technology, digital assets compliance, regulatory reporting, GDPR and privacy solutions, KYC and CDD tools, tax compliance automation and broader compliance platforms.

The data reveals a highly concentrated ecosystem. London is the clear centre of gravity for UK FinRegTech, with regional hubs emerging across Manchester, Birmingham, Reading, Leeds and Edinburgh. The firms operating in the sector show a far higher growth rate than the average UK business at an average growth rate of 19%.

For policymakers, economists, investors and financial institutions, this provides something that has not existed before: a live picture of the size, scale and structure of the UK’s FinRegTech market.

The dataset is now available within The Data City’s Industry Engine, giving users the ability to explore the full company list, analyse sector trends and export real-time insights. The Data City and Innovate Finance are continuing to collaborate on a series of deep dives and detailed economic impact analysis with further research due to be published later in the year.

This marks the first time the UK’s FinRegTech sector has been clearly defined and made measurable at scale.
