How PUBLIC used The Data City to map the UK EdTech market

Discover how PUBLIC, a digital transformation partner for the public sector, uses The Data City to build a live, exhaustive view of the UK EdTech market in its work with the Department for Education.

Overview

PUBLIC is a digital transformation partner for the public sector, working with government bodies across the UK, including local government and departments such as the Department for Education (DFE).

Eden Yitbarek is an Associate in PUBLIC’s digital data and tech team and led a project working with the DFE to map the UK’s EdTech market. PUBLIC had worked with The Data City before on a previous project and included the Industry Engine platform as a key part of its proposal for this engagement.

The Challenge

The project required PUBLIC to carry out a new market categorisation of the EdTech sector and provide a clear, exhaustive overview of the market landscape as part of its work with the DFE.

Much of the sector is made up of startups, many of which are difficult to track through conventional research methods. Manual searches and web scraping could not guarantee an exhaustive view, and the team was concerned that time-consuming manual processes would mean missing companies doing important work in the space.

It was really easy to get visualisations of the numbers we were seeing, which made our work so much easier.

The Solution

PUBLIC used The Data City’s Real Time Industrial Classification (RTIC) for EdTech to build an exhaustive, categorised view of the market, working through a structured process of manual searches and inclusion and exclusion criteria alongside The Data City team.

Because a static, manually built list could not stay current, PUBLIC worked with The Data City to build a live database, including a continuously updating tool that searches for and categorises new companies against the agreed criteria as they emerge.

The team also used The Data City’s Analyse tool to visualise the data throughout the project, generating charts and figures that fed directly into the final report.

The Data City team were very collaborative and responsive. They were always happy to get on a call, walk us through the Industry Engine, and come back to us with answers.

The Results

The live nature of the database has continued to add value beyond the initial project, with the market able to be tracked and re-categorised as it evolves.

Using The Data City, PUBLIC identified a gap between sectors seen as high impact, such as assistive and inclusive learning technologies, and their comparatively low level of investment, a finding that fed directly into recommendations for more targeted investment and policy.

PUBLIC found The Data City team collaborative and responsive throughout, with the team happy to walk through the platform on calls and follow up with answers to specific queries.
