Luke Horwell Front-End Developer

Luke joined The Data City to help build the future of the product. He has spent his career working in small development teams on SaaS products and is dedicated to delivering a good end user experience.

Luke takes an interest in user-centric design and understanding the user’s needs, ensuring the end user accomplishes their goals smoothly. He also likes absorbing design languages and guidelines, and advocates for best practices and device compatibility and accessibility standards.

With almost 10 years working experience, Luke is tackling the unique challenges of building an intuitively simple interface by default that is performant and provides a positive experience for customers. He works on improving the user interface, ensuring device compatibility and accessibility standards are met.

James Bell Head of Development

James has been working in web development for over 13 years, across a variety of programming languages and technologies. Alongside development, he also has several years of experience within Dev Ops and is AWS certified.

At his previous agency James lead the web development team, working with some of the world’s leading brands such as, Twitter, Pepsi, Castrol, Dominos, KPMG.

At Data City he works as a developer, helping to take our platform and website to the next level, and will be integral in the development of our global product.

Andrew Purdy Economic Software Developer

Andrew Purdy is a data scientist and trained economist with over five years of experience across government and private sector roles. When he’s not crunching numbers or building tools, you’ll find him in the gym or enjoying the outdoors.

At The Data City he delivers complex, data-driven projects for high profile clients such as EY, the Tony Blair Institute, techUK and The Department for the Economy, Northern Ireland. His work ensures clients can make informed decisions using detailed, data-backed insights in an intuitive way.

After graduating with a degree in Economics from the University of Leeds, Andrew joined BEIS. At BEIS he was responsible for modelling the impact of Free Trade Agreements and leading on improvements to the model’s capability within the department and across Whitehall.

Andrew also contributes to improving The Data City’s data capabilities. He has drawn on his economics background and data science techniques to develop solutions to identifying demographic information on company founders, financial outliers and company-level trade data.

By combining technical expertise with a deep understanding of data applications, Andrew helps clients maximise the value of The Data City’s tools and datasets.

Maki Myers Front-end developer

Maki is a software engineer with 16 years experience working on applications for brands such as BBC, Novuna, Pepsi and Castrol. He has worked in agencies and startups around the world, and was also the founder of his own software development agency.

Maki applies his passion for UI/UX design with technical expertise to build user friendly accessible applications that bridge the gap between complex requirements and natural user experiences.

At The Data City, Maki contributes to developing the platform interface and making access to data insights available in performant, user friendly interfaces.

Dan Billingsley Lead Developer

Dan originally studied physics before obtaining a PhD in the field of biophysics. His postgraduate work centred around studying interactions between DNA and protein molecules with microscopy techniques.

 At Data City he works as a developer, primarily responsible for the creation of data centred website tools such as the Data Explorer product. He is particularly interested in data on transport, waste, and housing. 

Luke Strange Data Engineer

Luke has an integrated master’s degree in physics from the University of Birmingham. He learnt to solve-problems with code while applying machine learning to analysing gravitational wave signals from colliding supermassive black holes.

He then transitioned to open data infrastructure and web development, working for The Data City’s sister company, Open Innovations.

Responsibility at TDC:

Luke will help maintain, improve, and build the underlying data infrastructure that powers The Data City as it expands its product globally. He draws on his background in physics, and experience delivering open data projects, to solve complex data challenges.
