Building the Industry Engine

Welcome to the first post in our new series, showcasing the development of our latest product innovation, the Industry Engine.

Over the next few months, we will be unveiling the next evolution of our product, designed to allow our customers to search and classify companies with unprecedented speed and accuracy.

Think of it as the Google for companies and industries—transforming how you discover and understand the business landscape.

Looking forward

Our current suite of tools, including Real-Time Industrial Classifications (RTICs), the ML List Builder, EXPLORE, and ANALYSE, has set the stage for what’s to come.

The Industry Engine will build upon these foundations, offering a refined LLM (large Language Model) based approach to company search and classification. This will improve company discovery and make it easier and quicker for users to gain insights.

As we progress, we’ll share insights into the research and development behind this groundbreaking tool, seeking your feedback to ensure it meets your needs.

Upcoming Features

Two standout features are set to revolutionise how you interact with our data:

Refreshed Similar Companies Tool: Our original similar companies feature had limitations, often identifying companies based on shared words rather than actual business activities. We have now addressed these issues with an enhanced tool that uses semantic search and context via our Large Language Model architecture.

Updated similar companies will be available in company profiles, plus users will soon be able create lists based on a single company or URL. Whether you’re mapping competitors or exploring niche sectors, this feature will streamline your search, delivering accurate results in seconds.

Intuitive, Smart Search: Imagine searching the entire UK business base using keywords, phrases, concepts, and even complete sentences. Our new Smart Search capability will make this a reality, drastically improving the discoverability of companies. You’ll be able to find businesses of interest and start exploring sectors with ease in seconds.

For instance, if you search for ‘management consultants specialising in wind power generation,’ you’ll instantly see companies in this specific field from our extensive database of over 5.5 million UK businesses.

In the coming months, we’ll provide more details about these and other new features.

What’s next?

We couldn’t be more excited about the journey ahead. In the coming months, we’ll reveal more about the Industry Engine and the exciting new features we’re developing.

Our goal is to provide clarity and understanding of what companies do, liberating you from outdated SIC codes and the tedious process of manually Googling businesses.

We look forward to sharing more updates and hearing your thoughts as we build the future of company classification together.

Keep an eye out for our next post in this series, where we’ll dive deeper into the specific technologies and innovations driving the Industry Engine forward.
