Updates to company investment data

Investment data is one of the most important signals of company and sector growth. Knowing where capital is flowing, which companies are attracting investment, and what trends look like across emerging industries gives our customers in government, academia, finance and beyond a clearer, more confident picture of the UK economy.

Investment data in the Industry Engine now updates daily, provides information on a company’s valuation in a specific round (where disclosed) and surfaces lead investor detail.

Introducing Specter

We’re partnering with Specter, a UK-founded company intelligence platform specialising in investment events, acquisitions and IPOs.

Specter works with some of the world’s leading organisations, including Nvidia, Goldman Sachs, Index Ventures and Bessemer Venture Partners, and is trusted by investors and analysts across the globe for the quality and freshness of its transaction data – updated continuously, with no data point older than 28 days.

Specter’s commitment to real-time, continuously updated data makes them a natural fit for The Data City. As a platform built on the principle that company intelligence should reflect the world as it is today and not six months ago, finding a data partner that shares that ambition was important to us. Specter does exactly that.

Our investment data

The Industry Engine is The Data City’s platform for real-time intelligence on UK companies and industries. Updated investment information is now available across our full range of tools and filters. For each company, you can explore:

  • Total investment raised
  • Individual rounds, including investment type and stage (Pre Seed, Seed, Series A through to Series J, Grant and more), amount raised, announced date, and post-money valuation where disclosed
  • Investor names and lead investor per round
  • Last known investment date
Investment data filters in the Industry Engine

This lets you:

  • Track investment across any sector – see total investment and recent rounds across any RTIC, company list or Analyse view to understand where capital is flowing
  • Identify recently funded companies – find companies that have raised recently, with round type, amount and investor detail in one place
  • Understand who is backing a sector – see which investors are active across an industry, from VCs to corporates to angels
  • Monitor investment momentum over time – spot emerging sectors attracting growing investment before they hit the mainstream
  • Build targeted company lists by investment stage, type or recency – whether you’re a BD team, investor or policy analyst, filter and export exactly the companies you need

What’s new?

Specter brings meaningful improvements over our previous investment data from day one.

API access, for the first time. Investment data can now be accessed through the Industry Engine API as well as the platform, so you can pull rounds, valuations and investor detail directly into your own systems.

Updated daily. Investment data now refreshes daily rather than monthly, meaning new rounds, updated valuations and investor changes appear in the Industry Engine within 24 hours of being announced rather than weeks later.

Richer round detail. Valuation data is one of the most requested additions to the Industry Engine and it is now here. Where disclosed, an investment round includes a post-money valuation. This combines with a full investor list per round, and a lead investor flag, giving a more complete picture of each deal.

Investment types and stages. Data covers a wide range of investment types and stages, from Pre Seed and Seed through to Series A-J, including Grants and more. New additions include Pre Seed, Equity Crowdfunding and Private Equity, broadening coverage of how companies at different stages are being invested in.

Acquisition filtering. Another long-requested feature: you can now filter for companies that have made acquisitions. This is alongside easier filtering of companies that have been acquired themselves. Acquisition data now covers 26,340 events, up from 15,448, and shows both sides of every deal for the first time. Together this gives a clearer view of M&A activity across any sector or company list.

What this means

Today

The integration covers our full platform, so whether you access via your login, or through one of our delivery methods such as the API, you can explore this data right now.

The transition from our previous provider has been designed to be seamless. If you already use investment data in your workflows, you will find everything where you left it. Existing tools and filters work as before, and in a number of areas you will already see improvements in coverage and detail.

Changes to the data

One thing worth noting: as with any change in data provider, you may see some differences in aggregate figures, total investment totals at sector or company level, for example. This is a natural result of moving to a different dataset, one built and structured differently.

In most cases the data will be comparable, and in a number of areas you will see improvements in detail and freshness. It is also possible that some investment rounds may be missing at this stage. If you spot anything missing reach out directly and we can look into it and ensure the data is updated.

If you have any other questions about specific investment rounds or figures, get in touch with our team.

Coming soon

The investment data we have already includes full IPO data, structured feeds covering public listings, which we are working to surface in the platform shortly. We are also adding deeper per-round investor detail.

In the future

The Specter partnership gives us access to a much wider catalogue of data beyond transactions, including company revenue and valuation signals, people data, investor intelligence and news and talent signals.

As a global platform covering over 50 million companies worldwide, Specter also opens the door to expanding our investment data beyond the UK, in line with The Data City’s own ambitions to grow internationally. We plan to bring these capabilities to customers over time.
