Type Ventures and Mount Crescent Research Identify UK Microsystems Companies
Discover how Type Ventures and Mount Crescent Research used The Data City’s machine learning tool and company data to identify UK microsystems businesses and assess the sector’s economic contribution.

Overview
Type Ventures provides communications and advisory for companies, investors and research institutions across the science and technology space. Mount Crescent Research is an economics consultancy that supports SMEs, policy stakeholders and development organisations with economic impact assessments, open-source research and strategic foresight.
The two organisations partnered on a project focused on measuring the economic contribution of the UK microsystems sector. To complete the project, the team needed reliable company data, including turnover, employment figures, SIC codes and company descriptions, all within a single platform.
- Advanced Manufacturing
- Economic Impact Modelling
- Sector Identification
- Smart Lists & Machine Learning
- Targeted Microsystems Dataset
- Improved Company Identification
The Challenge
Microsystems is a highly specialised subsector within advanced manufacturing, making it difficult to identify relevant businesses using traditional SIC codes alone. The team needed a way to accurately narrow down companies operating within overlapping and adjacent sectors while avoiding large numbers of irrelevant results.
The project also required a consolidated source of company intelligence to support economic modelling and analysis.
“ The Data City’s machine learning algorithm and Smart Lists feature helped create a much narrower and more targeted list of companies, which we could then refine further manually.
The Solution
Type Ventures and Mount Crescent Research used The Data City’s machine learning algorithm and Smart Lists feature to identify and refine a list of microsystems companies across the UK.
The ability to train the machine learning using examples of relevant and irrelevant companies helped the team build a much narrower and more accurate dataset. Additional keyword filters and the ability to save and revisit different versions of company lists also supported an iterative research process.
Alongside this, The Data City provided access to company information, including turnover estimates, employment data and SIC classifications in one place.
“ We needed a single place where we could access company names, descriptions, turnover, employment data and SIC codes, rather than finding that information in fragments.
The Results
Using The Data City, Type Ventures and Mount Crescent Research built a refined dataset of microsystems companies suitable for economic modelling and sector analysis.
The platform reduced the time spent sourcing fragmented company information and helped narrow down a highly specialised group of businesses that would have been difficult to identify through traditional classification methods alone.
Despite the complexity and granularity of the microsystems sector, The Data City enabled the team to build a targeted dataset of relevant companies, with the platform’s machine learning capabilities.
