Agricultural technology companies are reshaping how our food is produced. Our recent work finding companies the UK’s emerging AgriTech sector has unsurfaced some absolute gems.
One of our favourites is Growing Underground. A brand of Zero Carbon Farms, they grow microgreens and salad leaves 33 metres below the streets of Clapham. They had us at the Jam reference.
Zero Carbon Farms Ltd is registered at companies house (company number 08067659) under SIC Code ‘01130 – Growing of vegetables and melons, roots and tubers’.
They’re exactly the kind of innovative company that SIC codes underserve. The reason that companies like this are growing underground and sometimes out of sight.
There’s no code that adequately describes carbon negative farming. No code that captures the use of hydroponic systems or LED technology in farming. Certainly no code that describes farms using tunnels underneath city streets.
In the absence of a good code, Zero Carbon Farms’ founders have had to choose a code that categorises them alongside very traditional producers that have nothing in common with their sustainable philosophy, technology or approach.
