The Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA) is the professional body championing the UK’s sport and physical activity workforce.
Their mission is to support, develop, and recognise the people who keep the nation moving.
CIMSPA’s Insight & Impact team, led by Phil Wright, wanted to create a unified definition of the sector – and back it up with evidence. The aim? To bring consistency to a fragmented landscape and empower stakeholders across the industry to make informed, data-driven decisions.

The sector lacked a clear, consistent understanding of who makes up the workforce, where they’re based, and what roles they perform.
Different organisations used different definitions and data sources, making meaningful collaboration difficult.
CIMSPA needed a way to standardise how the industry is defined and represented, and to visualise this in a clear and accessible way for internal stakeholders, partners and members.
CIMSPA now has six live RTICs covering the sport and physical activity sector, enriched with integrated job and skills data from Lightcast.
Alongside this, the launch of the CIMSPA Data Lens has provided a user-friendly platform for members, making complex data more accessible and actionable.
Together, these tools have significantly improved CIMSPA’s ability to evidence impact, support strategic decision-making and foster collaboration across the sector. Internal teams can now interrogate the data with confidence, while members gain a clearer, real-time view of the industry landscape.
What’s next
CIMSPA continues to use The Data City platform and Data Lens to inform strategic projects and workforce insights. With their RTICs live, they’re building sector-wide consistency and supporting decision-making with real-time evidence.
