Life at The Data City

Exploring Innovation Clubs at The Data City

At The Data City, innovation is the essence of our culture. We believe that to remain at the forefront of the data landscape, we must continuously evolve and embrace new perspectives.

Our Innovation Clubs are a key part of this journey, designed to engage, challenge, and sometimes push us out of our comfort zones. These sessions are not just about learning but transforming how we think, work, and innovate.

The Power of Shared Experiences (one of our values- ‘we keep our friends close’)

One of the unique aspects of our Innovation Clubs is the opportunity to learn directly from the diverse ways our data is utilised; a recent session featured one of our clients, who demonstrated how they use our data as the “secret sauce” in their sales process.

This session was not only fascinating; highlighting the different and practical impact of our work, but also really rewarding for the team to see how the features they had worked on from the data pipeline, through to the code and UI are used and loved by our clients.

By understanding how clients leverage our data to win customers, we gained valuable feedback and inspiration, driving us to enhance our offerings and think creatively about new applications. Within two days of this session, we improved our search feature based on the feedback!

Another memorable session was led by economist Paul Swinney who uses our data at Centre for Cities to map the geography of the UK’s new economy. This exploration into economic landscapes revealed patterns and trends that are shaping the future. It was a powerful reminder of the potential our data holds in uncovering insights that can influence policy and business strategies.

Innovation often requires stepping into unfamiliar territories, we invited friends of The Data City- Creode to our offices for a session with the rapper Testament.

Testament took us all on a journey through the history of rap, showing how the genre has continually evolved by challenging norms and embracing diversity. His message was clear: it’s not about where you’re from, but where you are at.

Testament was amazing- mixing storytelling with ad hoc raps and engaging the whole team to try out some freestyle rap. This resonated deeply as we are constantly striving to push the boundaries of what is possible.

Looking Ahead: More Innovations on the Horizon

We are excited about the upcoming Innovation Clubs, which promise to bring even more fresh perspectives and ideas. Xanthe Elis, a renowned fashion photographer and lecturer, will be speaking on creativity – inspiring us to see data through a different lens, appreciating the artistry in our analytical work.

Mark Goldstone, policy manager at CBI, will offer a unique view on what matters most to policy makers, how policy markers approach challenges and what is meaningful to them to make decisions. Understanding these priorities can guide us in tailoring our data products to better meet the needs of public sector clients and influence policy decisions.

We are also gearing up for a thought-provoking experience at the Lifi Festival, where we will explore the question, “Could AI save humanity?” In a business where we use AI, both at a low level for marketing and operations, through more innovative uses within our product, considering the uses and implications of the future of AI is both pertinent and important.

This event will challenge us to think deeply about the ethical implications and future potential of AI, aligning with our commitment to responsible innovation.

Embracing a Culture of Continuous Innovation

The Innovation Clubs at The Data City are more than just events—they are a testament to our commitment to fostering a culture of continuous learning and innovation. By bringing in diverse voices and perspectives, we ensure that our team is always at the cutting edge of data innovation and developing as individuals.

These sessions not only enhance our skills and knowledge but also inspire us to think bigger and bolder. With each Innovation Club, we are reminded that true innovation comes from being open to new ideas and willing to step outside of our comfort zones.

At The Data City, we are not just building a company; we are cultivating a community of innovators ready to shape the future. Stay tuned for more updates from our Innovation Clubs; customers and friends of The Data City are always welcome to join us on this exciting journey of discovery and growth!
