The Data City platform provides a fresh perspective on UK trade data, making it even easier to identify companies that import and export, providing key insights into the trade activity of companies and emerging sectors.

This blog will show why trade data is important, how it works in our platform and how you can make the most out of The Data City platform.

Why UK trade data matters?

Trade data is a cornerstone of economic analysis and business strategy. For example, companies that export are internationally competitive and are likely to grow their business, which has an impact on local areas.

Trade data is important because it provides crucial insights into global trade patterns, enabling policymakers, researchers, and businesses to make informed decisions regarding market trends, economic analysis, policy development, and identifying new trade opportunities.

Whether you’re tracking import or export trends, uncovering growth opportunities, or benchmarking against industry competitors, understanding trade activity is crucial.

The challenge? Many trade datasets are high level, making it difficult to understand the companies that contribute. That’s where The Data City excels, offering an up-to-date, dynamic view of UK trade.

The Data City’s approach to Trade Data

Our data comes from HMRC. Each month we gather information on the companies that have exported or imported since 2016. This includes the types of goods companies have traded and when they have traded.

We then match these companies to a Company House number, so that you can better understand the sectors they operate in, the locations they operate from, and their financial position.

How to use Trade Data in The Data City platform

Trade information for an individual company can be found in the ‘General’ tab of a company page in the platform.

If you’re looking to exclusively look at companies with trade data, head to EXPLORE, go to the growth tab and click ‘Only include companies with export/import data’ and you will see a list of all the company imports and exports.

You can also find companies that export a particular good. Within growth, select the export codes tab, and start typing or select from the list of codes. This allows you to select high level trade codes (HS chapter) and for filtering in more detail please get in touch about our API.

Analysing a list?

If you’re analysing a list, you’ll find information on the broad supply and demand of goods.

Of the 4.5m active companies on our platform, at least 53,700 of them have imported electrical machinery, equipment, or parts thereof.

Trade data is very detailed, and we do have more detailed data available through our API or through flat file. Please get in touch if this is of interest.
